California State Parks invites the public to attend a community workshop on the Malibu Creek Ecosystem Restoration Project. The project team will present on the current design and engineering work, hydraulic and sediment transport modeling, and alternatives being considered for removal of Rindge Dam. In addition, a focused discussion on the surf break at Surfrider Beach and a presentation on a surf impact assessment study and modeling process will occur during the second half of the workshop. The public will have the opportunity to ask questions and share comments with the project team. The public workshop will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2025; from 6 - 7:30 pm followed by the surf study discussion from 7:45 – 8:30pm at Pepperdine University, 24255 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, CA 90263; Lighthouse Room, Tyler Campus Center. Free parking is available at Seaver Main Lot B.
The Malibu Creek Ecosystem Restoration Project aims to restore a portion of the Malibu Creek watershed through removal of Rindge Dam and modification of eight barriers upstream. The dam and barriers have blocked habitat for native species in Malibu Creek, in particular the endangered steelhead trout, for more than 100 years. The project will restore habitat connectivity and ecological processes and nourish our local beaches with sand. An Integrated Feasibility Report (IFR) with Environmental Impact Report (EIR)/Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was completed in 2020 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and State Parks and a public workshop was held on June 13, 2023 outlining the results of that study and the next steps for the project. This workshop will discuss work that has been completed since the June 2023 workshop and the alternatives being considered for dam removal. For questions about the workshop, email R.J. Van Sant at Richard.vansant@parks.ca.gov.
